Works By Hungarian Creators Showcased During Milan Design Week

The Design Walk in Budapest exhibition has opened in Milan, featuring works by Hungarian designers, sculptors, painters and photographers between 15 and 21 April 2024. The Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency (HFDA) is ensuring participation in the world’s largest annual design event, Milan Design Week, for the third time. This time, Hungarian artists’ works will be displayed in the Triennale Milano Museum under the Budapest Select umbrella brand. The exhibition’s curator is an international icon of contemporary design, Rossana Orlandi.

After Brera and Alcova, now Hungarian design is debuting in the Triennale Milano Museum, one of the well-known venues of Milan Design Week. The museum has been one of the world’s leading cultural institutions since 1923, transmitting the complexity of the contemporary world in a variety of artistic forms: design, architecture, painting, visual and performing arts.

Rossana Orlandi, the curator of the Design Walk in Budapest exhibition, called to life a concept combining cultural heritage, harmony and dynamics. The exhibition celebrates the creative ambience of Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, cradled by the Danube as a nexus of cultural fusion, showcasing its architectural and design heritage through a contemporary lens. It emphasises the city's unique ability to preserve its multifaceted historical traditions while embracing modernity.

Visitors can view 61 objects by 13 designers at the exhibition. The 2023 design LAB curated by Rossana Orlandi incubation program’s products will be presented at the Milan Design Week for the first time. In addition to design brands, works by other designers and artists will appear in the exhibition space to reflect the essence of the concept to the fullest: blurring the lines between reality and imagination, visual art and design, fueling inspiration and inviting discovery.

The design LAB curated by Rossana Orlandi program aimed to draw attention to the importance of the responsibility of design and manufacturing and the significance of the value of Hungarian cultural heritage and traditions. Five manufacturer-designer duos realised their joint projects in the program, which breathe new life into historical monuments, infusing them with contemporary relevance by reinterpreting the myths constituting the basis of our culture and the city's architectural marvels.

Drawing inspiration from Hungarian and Transylvanian mythology, Dóra Abodi and Zakar Clayart Kft created the ABODI Mythical Creatures ceramic pot collection. Diána Alchhabi brought to life Bloomaire, a chandelier inspired by the Matthias Church in Budapest with LumoConcept Kft, Judit Pócs and Multifelt Factory Kft developed acoustic space divider panels in the incubation programme. The pieces of Silent Stones embody the soft, rounded stones found in the Danube and seabeds. The solid wood furniture line made in the collaboration of Sára Kele and Nezozen Kft is called PONTUM, and it evokes a central bridge in Budapest, Elisabeth Bridge. Norbert Juhász (komok) and Barlang Műhely Kft created the Átló (Diagonal) furniture collection, inspired by the unique geographic location of Hungary.

In addition to design LAB projects, works by other designers and artists complete the fusion between historical traditions and modernity at the Design Walk in Budapest exhibition. Position Collective created the OTE lamp collection using artificial intelligence, drawing inspiration from the scattering and linear patterns typical of the Kalotaszeg region. Contemporary artists joined the exhibition: as a courtesy of HEART & CHERRY gallery, Áron Baráth, painter, and Bence Magyarlaki, sculptor, and as a courtesy of Einspach Fine Art & Photography, Ádám Dóra and Dániel Kármán, painters, Tamás Melkovics and Menyus Szabó, sculptors, and Zoltán Tombor, photographer fill the space with their artworks. The large format photos of Budapest, works of Matteo Carassale, an Italian photographer, literally evoke the Hungarian capital.

The works by Hungarian designers, sculptors, painters and photographers will be exhibited on the first floor of the Triennale Milano Museum at the Design Walk in Budapest exhibition during the Milan Design Week between 15 and 21 April 2024. Those interested can also meet Hungarian design in another significant place, Rossana Orlandi’s Master Gallery, where Solinfo Group’s Timbart brand will exhibit.
