NORNA – Árkossy Bútor Kft.

The founders of the brand Norna, Petra Pinezits and Alexandra Takács create long-lasting furniture that make opportunities to shape new experiences and to constantly weave new stories spanning generations. For them, everything has meaning, from choosing the name through picking topics to the process of design. NORNA products have a story, designing is always preceded by an exploration of a topic that they want to tell through the furniture. The Norns always work in a group of three, so Petra and Alexandra keep reserving this third place for a collaborative partner, manufacturer, designer, or creative expert.

Why did you choose Árkossy Bútor Kft. for the place of your internship in the design START programme?

We arrived to the programme with a current product, so we looked for a manufacturer with whom we could start producing it. It was useful to concentrate solely on this project for a week, because we even finished a prototype during this time. We were curious to visit Árkossy Bútor Kft.’s factory since we knew they had a very large production line. We could also explore if the furniture was possible to be made in their factory and we had the chance to understand the process of production quite well too. The product plan was not yet final before our internship, and we got a lot of help from the experts during the two weeks to think about it further and take it to the next step. The manufacturer company was able to help us in better understanding and the process of choosing of the right materials too.

Did you get the answers, knowledge, and information you were seeking during the two-week internship?

Yes, we feel like we made excellent use of the time of the internship, the manufacturer also put maximum energy into transmitting the relevant knowledge and experience.  Árkossy Bútor Kft.’s profile does not include the production of chairs; still, they helped us a lot in finding answers to our questions.

What will you be able to use in your own work, in running your business from what you have learnt?

We created a prototype for the outdoors furniture line of our design, based on which, we were able to formulate what worked and what we wanted to change during production. The current furniture is rather specific; it is a folding outdoor chair. We dreamt up the designs, but it was worth thinking about the best possible implementation and mass production together. Tamás Árkossy (CEO of Árkossy Bútor Kft.) told us a lot about the beginnings of his own enterprise, his personal journey, and furniture, which inspired us immensely. We learnt a lot of interesting things which are useful and new for a small business regarding machinery, materials, and workflow.

Will you continue to cooperate in some form, are you thinking about a future joint product or collaboration?

We think it is possible to cooperate again in the future, we liked the manufacturing and the workflow, to see everything coming together, and we formed a great personal relationship as well.
