itthon. – LumoConcept Kft.
Itthon. is a socially responsible design brand, which aims to expand the possibilities of people living in Vojdovina, drawing on their artisanal traditions. The project invites low-tech but highly skilled workshops to create collaborative collections. The objects are small-scale home accessories made of natural and local materials which finely mix traditional craftsman techniques with the contemporary world of forms.
Why did you choose LumoConcept as your internship location in the design START programme?
It has been in our minds for a long time to create a luminaire, but we have not had any experience regarding the technical part; the internship was a great opportunity to see how manufacturing works. We have not yet reached the product development phase, but it was an amazing experience for us to look into the operation of a company of 15 people since our longer-term vision is business development, and we could see a great example through real projects.
Did you get the answers and knowledge you were seeking during the two-week internship?
Yes. We had a better overview of the company's organisation, operation, and technological background, which we could not have done without the internship. Owing to this, we can think through our plans and questions regarding business development.
What will you be able to use in your own work, in running your business from what you have learnt?
It was amazing to see project-based thinking and business management first-hand, and we could draw parallels with our own operation. Experiencing the delegation and division of tasks was an important experience for us. We had the opportunity to talk to almost all of the staff, so we were able to get an insight into the sub-processes. Although we have seen foreign examples of such high-quality productions, it was great to see a Hungarian one.
Will you continue to cooperate in some form, did you think about a future joint product or collaboration?
We were not thinking about about creating products together, but we had brainstorming sessions and are open to a collaboration in the future. In addition to them being welcoming on a personal level, it felt like we became part of the team, they shared knowledge and their workshop’s secrets which was a great help to us. We were particularly inspired by the new surface treatment techniques and luminaire technology details we have met, which got us thinking about how we could combine a traditional luminaire (e.g. made with basket weaving) with a very innovative and modern lighting technique. These technologies have opened up a world of possibilities for us in lamp design.
