ANETT SAFRAN – Organic Porcelain Manufaktúra

The creator of the brand ANETT SAFRAN, Anett Sáfrán, a ceramist, identified the rejuvenation of porcelain as her designer challenge. The brand’s products include objects of use and decoration elements for both catering establishments and individual users. The brand aims to bring creations to life that inspire us to a more conscious and selective behaviour so that the things we choose and purchase can have a longer and fuller life.

Why did you choose Organic Porcelain Manufaktúra Kft. for the place of your internship in the design START programme?

As a freelancer, I produce my objects a in limited number, so I wanted to experience the process when objects go through the tuning for production. I was looking for an answer to the question of what changes I would need to make to my mould-making process if I were to move out of the world of small-scale production. It is great that I formed an active relationship with a manufacturer with whom I will be happy to work if circumstances allow.

Did you get the answers, knowledge, and information you were seeking during the two-week internship?

Yes, I got even more than I expected. This programme was the first to give me an opportunity to work closely with a manufacturer, something I wanted to experience for a long time. In the world of ceramics, two weeks is a very short time, so we could not reach our end goal, but I got some tasks during the internship that I have to complete in order to manufacture, for example, one of my cup collections in the future. Besides expanding my knowledge of raw materials, I gained knowledge that enables me to think further about product development and manufacturing.

What will you use or build into your own business and work from what you learnt during the internship?

I will surely be able to incorporate the important factors for production into the design process. Thanks to the internship, during my cost and price calculations, I can now understand better which of the raw materials and glazes are in which price range, and how this affects the price of the final product, which is not necessarily something to stick to in the design, but it is useful to be aware of. I also saw an example of a precise calculation of the value and production costs of an object. If the designer thinks in terms of function, target audience, and location of use, it helps with producing long-lasting, high-quality products since every detail must work, not only self-expression.

Will you continue to cooperate in some form, are you thinking about a future joint product or collaboration?

During the internship, a good work relationship formed between us, we think alike and have similar educational background, Viktor (Viktor Erdei – founder and CEO of Organic Porcelain Manufaktúra) was very open-minded and helpful. I trust that we can collaborate again in the future, maybe even in the framework of the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency’s design LAB programme to create a new product.
